Kids Ministry Coordinator Job Description

Job Title:  Kids Ministry Coordinator
Location:  Richmond, Virginia (Hybrid)
Status:  Part time (6-10 hours/week)
Pay Rate:  $20/hour

The Kids Ministry Coordinator will be responsible for creating and overseeing an engaging, inclusive, and age-appropriate experience for kids (nursery - grade 5) at Common Table. This role involves fostering a radically welcoming environment where kids can explore faith, ask questions, and learn about God's love. The work of the Coordinator will reflect the values of our community at Common Table: reconciling, sacramental, safe, accessible, and responsive. This position will work collaboratively with the pastor, church leadership, and volunteers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development & Implementation:

    • Select, adapt, or create imaginative and age-appropriate curriculum for kids (nursery through grade 5) that reflects Common Table’s theological commitments, including an emphasis on justice, inclusivity, and curiosity.

    • Integrate artistic, creative, and experiential learning methods into all children’s programming.

    • Ensure that lessons and activities foster a sense of wonder and compassion and engage diverse biblical perspectives.

  • Volunteer Recruitment & Management:

    • Recruit, train, equip, and support a team of dedicated volunteers for the Kids Ministry.

    • Foster a positive and collaborative environment for volunteers, providing ongoing encouragement and resources. (e.g. pre-service huddles, volunteer celebration, and prayer).

    • Ensure all volunteers are appropriately background-checked and trained in Common Table’s child safety policies.

  • Program Oversight & Administration:

    • Oversee all aspects of the Kids Ministry during Sunday services and other church events as needed.

    • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment for children.

    • Develop and manage the Kids Ministry budget in collaboration with church leadership.

    • Maintain accurate records (e.g., attendance, volunteer schedules, and parent/guardian contact information).

    • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about the Kids Ministry program, upcoming events, and ways to engage in Kids Ministry at home.

  • Integration & Collaboration:

    • Work with the pastor and other ministry leaders to ensure the Kids Ministry is integrated with the broader life and mission of Common Table, including weekly worship practices and communications. 

    • Explore and implement ways for children to participate in justice-oriented activities and creative expressions with the church community.

    • Partner with parents/guardians in the spiritual formation of their children, offering resources and support.

  • Fostering an Inclusive & Safe Community:

    • Champion an environment that is explicitly queer-affirming and welcoming to children and families of all identities and backgrounds.

    • Ensure that all programming and interactions reflect a commitment to creating a space where questions are encouraged and diverse experiences are valued.

    • Implement and uphold all child safety and protection policies.


Required Qualifications:

  • A vibrant personal faith and a theological resonance with Common Table’s mission of cultivating ministers of reconciliation around the table of Jesus Christ.

  • Demonstrated experience working with kids in a ministry, educational, or community setting.

  • Passion for fostering kids’ spiritual development in creative and engaging ways.

  • Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate teaching methods.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills.

  • Ability to recruit, inspire, and lead volunteers effectively.

  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, affirming, and safe environment for all children and families, including LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.

  • A collaborative spirit and ability to work well within a team.

  • Proficiency with basic computer skills (e.g., email, word processing, potentially social media or church management software).

  • Must pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a Christian or similar faith context.

  • Experience developing and implementing creative, arts-based, or justice-oriented children's programming.

  • Familiarity with liturgical traditions and/or deconstruction conversations within faith.

  • Relevant educational background (e.g., early childhood education, theology, ministry) or equivalent experience.
